My Purpose--Why India?

The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious awards programs worldwide. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program was established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of people, knowledge, and skills. Fulbright a competitive program that selects students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists, and artists to study, conduct research, and pursue their talents. Individuals in the various countries also competitively choose representatives to study, conduct research, and etc in the United States.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship specifically places a Fulbrighter in a classroom broad to help teachers of English to no-native English speakers. ETA’s help teach English language while serving as a cultural ambassador for U.S culture. In India, ETA’s also must fulfill a research project of their choice but related to their teaching experience.

**I personally chose India because  I had unfinished business. During my last visit with the Semester at Sea program I participated in several volunteering projects. One of the projects involved volunteering at an orphanage. At this orphanage I met a woman that literally changed my life. As I spoke with her, I found myself and I realized that my purpose in life is to serve for others no matter what. This woman also helped me fully cope with the loss of my mother to cancer. While here, I hope to do my best as an ETA and to also figure out how I want to fulfill my purpose and maintain my happiness

    Hello Sandy,

    I find your blog fascinating for many reasons, but all the more so because in July 2013 I am going to India as a fellow of Teachers For global Classrooms. I will be there for 3 weeks, but i have been reading a lot about Indian history and culture, and have been writing to a school librarian in the Mumbai area.
    I do not see any blog posts after October, 2012. Are you still in Kolkata? I am so curious to know about the rest of your stay. Please keep posting...
